Laguna West
Laguna West formally became a part of the city of Elk Grove, December 15th of 2003. Laguna West - Lakeside is situated in the historic gold field area that first brought miners to the state in 1849. Elk Grove was a hotel and stage stop in 1850. Only 15 miles south of Sutter's Fort, the area became a center for business, entertainment, mail service and agricultural ventures. The community today remains a business and entertainment center that is independent of nearby Sacramento.

The 120-acre Elk Grove Park draws teams from around the country for softball tournaments. The park also hosts the annual Strauss Festival, which recreates 18th century Vienna in four open-air performances each July. Other nearby areas of interest include the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe for camping, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and other seasonal sports. San Francisco and many Pacific Ocean coastal attractions are equally accessible.

Nearby Sacramento is the capital of California. The State Capitol building, which took 14 years to construct, has a glass dome rising 210 feet above the street. Historical and artistic exhibits can be seen in the main building. The Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park contains furniture and personal effects of former governors of the state. Ronald Reagan was the last governor to live in the mansion. The State Library houses a collection of early state newspapers. Also in the library is a 100-foot mural in a granite structure created by Maynard Dixon. Old Sacramento is a four-block area that served as the commercial center during the Gold Rush. The history of this period is preserved in the redeveloped area, which now contains museums, restaurants and shops.

The Sacramento River offers paddleboat tours, houseboat trips on the Delta, water-skiing, jet skiing, fishing, canoeing and sailing. The American River also has boating and fishing. Waterworld USA is a water park for all ages. There are wading pools, slides, wave pools, tubing, and a play area. For fans of professional sports, the Sacramento Kings tip off at Arco Arena. Other popular attractions are the Sacramento Zoo, the California Military Museum and the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
